Biography

blue underline

My name is Gabriel Patterson. I was born and raised in Santa Fe, NM. My identity and cultural ties are rooted in the outdoors. My siblings and I grew up spending significant time outside building forts, constructing patios and fences (projects for our parents), rollerblading, skateboarding, biking, exploring, exploring, exploring. I was deeply involved in the vaquero/buckaroo/cowboy lifestyle into my teens, though then transitioned most of my time toward team sports of ice hockey and soccer. Today, I live in Davis, CA, and my home gym is Sacramento Pipeworks. I’ve climbed all over California, though my favorite places are Owen’s River Gorge near Bishop and, while in a different state, Red Rocks Canyon in Nevada. Right before COVID hit, I reached the anchors on a 12.c in Red Rocks with only one-take or so. I was climbing the hardest I have in my entire life. In the gym, I was climbing similarly, 5.12c-d. Lastly, back in 2017, I started an affinity group for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, though their co-conspirators were always welcome and anyone who united under the cause. We are called Soul Ascension Crew.

Q & A

  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport?: I attended Colorado College, and starting in 2009 during my freshman year, I became deeply interested in rock climbing and telemark skiing. I have been doing both ever since. For climbing specifically, many of my most profound connections with friends are through our experiences learning to climb together outside. Some of our most excellent trips were climbing the Ellingwood Arete of the Creston Needle in CO, Ancient Art in Moab, Utah, and numerous other desert towers. I carried this passion for climbing with me on every international adventure following graduation in 2013. For example, I lived in Rio de Janeiro and often climbed with Andrew Lenz, Founder of CEU, Centro de Escalada Urbana, or Center of Urban Climbing. Even Alex Honnold has gone and climbed with Andrew and students of this community-driven project. While in Rio, I guided climbing trips through Andrew’s company, ClimbinRio. My favorite climb down there was a route up Corcovado mountain to Christ the Redeemer. 2. Who were your influences early in life?: My maternal and paternal grandparents, and my parents.
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: The visuals, how the sky looks, how the tress move in the wind, the sound of birds, and the fresh air, the stepping away from life as usual.
  4. What’s your dream trip or expedition?: Sport climbing trip to various international destinations. I've climbed some desert towers in Utah and have trad climbed in Tuolumne Meadows, but to climb something big in Yosemite would be a dream expedition. Also, I am a telemark skier so to attend a telemark festival or telemark on another continent would be extreme!
  5. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: Trust, "vision" to anticipate movement, drive, enthusiasm, and someone to inspire and encourage me.
  6. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship program to others?: The most immediate and tangible way is through my climbing group. What I learn will SCARPA will equate to knowledge that I can disseminate readily and naturally as I am working with youth or adult beginner climbers. Also, I will be a better asset to my climbing team, or partner, or expedition with these skills.
