Biography

blue underline

I was born in Torreon, Coahuila Mexico and migrated to New Mexico at the age of 10. I grew up in the United States as an undocumented immigrant. The struggles my family & community faced motivated me to get involved in community organizing for immigrant, racial and climate justice. Since the day I migrated and took my first glance towards the snowy mountain ranges of northern New Mexico, the mountains became my refuge. The mountains became a sacred place where I could reclaim my humanity regardless of my immigration status. I enjoy rock climbing in the alpine, trail running and splitboarding. My journey in the mountains has motivated me to work towards an IFMGA Mountain Guide certification and to continue bringing my community together in the mountains. I serve as the Land Base & Outdoor Director for The Semilla Project. I am an AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor and an Apprentice Alpine Guide.

Q & A

  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport? : I got involved with mountaineering in general, both because of my dad and the reality of living undocumented in the US. I always dreamed of going on adventures where my immigration status did not limit me so that naturally led me and my siblings to climb our home mountains. Slowly but surely, through youtube videos, trial & error, and mentorship I got deeply involved into rock climbing & splitboarding in the alpine.
  2. Who were your early influences in life?: One of the earliest influences in my life were my Mother and Father - both loved adventures and the mountains, and as a child they always motivated me to go outdoors and do what I love.
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: Three things draw me to the outdoors: the first one is the love of adventures, the second one is the desire to further my relationship with the land and lastly to enjoy beautiful moments with friends, family and loved ones.
  4. What makes a good skiing/climbing/hiking partner?: For me, a good skiing, climbing, running, and hiking partner is someone that loves to go on adventures regardless of how much suffering it would entail or how early we would have to wake up, always has a positive attitude, & has respect for the mountains.
  5. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship?: I serve as the land base & outdoor director for The Semilla Project, a non-profit that works towards creating more access to the outdoors for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Through the different outdoor programs we run I will be able to directly pass what I learn in the mentorship to other BIPOC climbers, runners, hikers, and alpinists.
