Biography

blue underline

was born with a condition called arthrogryposis, causing my left arm to remain unerdeveloped and fused at the elbow and wrist. I have always loved sports that challenge me and perceptions of what I ‘should be doing’. In high school I made the varsity basketball team my junior and senior years after people told me I should be playing soccer instead as, “You have two fully functioning legs!”. I didn’t like soccer…
I would run to stay in shape and found a love for it as well. This love for running combined with my pursuit of pushing my limits led me to dive into the endurance world after college. I have since biked across the US, run a 100 mile foot race twice, become a ‘Leadman’ in the Leadville race series, completed the Teton ‘Picnic’ Triathlon twice, traversed the Teton Range on skis, was the first person with a perminant disability to complete the Smok N’ Fire 400 backcountry bike race, and am currently on a mission with two other adaptive athletes to go from the lowest point in elevation to the highest point on every continent all human powered. We have completed South America so far.
Giving back has been a big part of who I am. Whether that’s raising money for a cause I believe in, putting in work hours to help build affordable housing, or starting a non profit geared towards helping people who need prosthetics and/or adaptive equipment, it has taken many forms.

The SCARPA Athlete Mentorship Initiative presented by Mountain Hardwear has been created to connect and engage the SCARPA and Mountain Hardwear Athlete teams with accomplished athletes from historically marginalized communities aspiring to take their sport or career to the next level. The mission of this program is to connect mentors with mentees focused on the sports we serve to provide participants with opportunities for personal, athletic and career development with the goal of helping to create a more inclusive and diverse community of athletes.

Q & A

blue underline
  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport?: I wanted to find ways to bring endurance to the winter season. I found out about some underground skimo races in the Vail area and showed up. I was the guy who showed up in heavy touring gear while everyone else was decked out in skimo skis and skinsuits. Turns out I loved it.
  2. Who were your influences early in life?: Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Brett Favre, Steve Nash, most of my grade school teachers
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: Solitude, Beauty, Serenity, Mental Fortitude, Challenges/Obsacles, Wildlife, Perspective, Clarity
  4. What’s your dream trip or expedition?: So many! Climbing the seven summits (in progess), anything that reqires multiple disciplines (swimming, biking, running, climbing, skiing, etc), The Grand Traverse in the Tetons via ‘Picnic’ style, Ski off the volcanos of the PNW (maybe with a bike approach?), I’d also love to climb Ama Dablam
  5. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: Someone who is as stoked as you to be out there and is a continued student of the outdoors
  6. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship program to others?: Hopefully by changing perceptions as to who ‘should’ be recreating in outdoor places. Specifically, but not limited to, the adaptive/disabled community. I want to see more of us getting at it and normalize people with disabilities in the outdoors
