Biography

I am Scott Lehmann, a third-generation deaf person, educator and a mountaineer. Growing up, there was
a lack of deaf representation in the outdoors nor access to outdoor education, so the outdoors was not a
big part of my life. It was not until I was 23 years old, fresh out of college and on a cross-country road trip
with my Deaf friends that I climbed a mountain for the first time. Up there, I struggled to figure out how to put on crampons and rope up. That’s when I realized there was so much more I needed to learn about mountaineering. So, I taught myself through studying YouTube videos and asking other climbers on mountains using paper and pen. Over the last ten years, I have been climbing different places in the world. In 2021, I was part of the first all-deaf team to summit Denali and became the first deaf individual to summit all 50 United States High Points. My partner, Shayna and I just launched a project, Seeing Beyond: Seven Summits. We are aiming to be the first deaf individuals to reach the Seven Summits and to inspire others in our community to try outdoor sports!

Q & A

  1. How did you get involved with the sport?: My first mountaineering experience started off on a fun summer climb on Mount Rainier with two friends in 2012. We were completely inexperienced and unprepared for the climb. We did not come close to the summit, but the experience inspired me to climb more.
  2. Who were your influences early in life?:: My parents. They instilled the values of work ethics, commitment and perseverance in me.
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: Just being outside makes me happy
  4. What’s your dream trip or expedition?: The Himalayas
  5. What makes a good climber/hiking partner?: A good climbing partner to me is someone who is open-minded, accommodating and willing to pick up some basic American Sign Language skills!
  6. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship program to others?: I hope to become a mentor to the next generation of deaf and hard of hearing youth, so that they don’t have to learn mountaineering skills through paper and pen or YouTube.
