Biography

blue underline

I am a second-generation Vietnamese Southerner lucky enough to have spent epic days on snow. There’s nothing like the pure movement of a great ski line that makes me feel free. I want others to experience joy, build grit, and find a snowsports community, just like I have. Growing up in a service-oriented family, a lot of what I do is to build opportunities for others to learn and grow. I oversee operations for a WOC-owned backcountry education company, manage my city’s parks and trails, and serve on numerous outdoor recreation boards.

Q & A

  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport?: COVID lockdowns left me without options to recreate outside in ways I understood. It was only until friends lent me equipment and taught me the basics did I learn to love skiing.
  2. Who were your influences early in life?: I remember my grandfather exercising with concrete weights, and my dad learning to ride trails with a secondhand mountain bike. Even though we had so little, they taught me to be self-sufficient.
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: I am the person I am today because of formative outdoor experiences. The outdoors is one of the few places in modern society to reflect deeply and learn about yourself.
  4. What’s your dream trip or expedition?: My dream trip is an endless winter! 12 months of backcountry skiing, learning from snowsport cultures all around the world.
  5. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: I appreciate partners who have the maturity to express fear and concern. Traditional mountain culture sometimes pressures us to take unnecessary risk. Vulnerability trumps overconfidence in my book.
  6. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship program to others?: Knowledge is just as expensive as brand-new ski equipment. I want to pass what I’ve learned in the SAMI program onto the folks I work with, so that they have the agency to start their own projects!
