Biography

blue underline

I am a climbing advocate and educator born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. I currently live in Eastern New Jersey, just outside of New York City.

I spent over 10 years working as a freelance media producer and educator in the St. Louis area. After moving to New York City in 2012, I began to fall in love with the outdoors while exploring parks and trails in New York State. During a 2016 vacation to Colorado, I experienced rock climbing for the first time and it was love at first climb. Since then, I have been immersed in the climbing community; volunteering with Young Women Who Crush, Brown Girls Climb and the Torne Valley Climbers Coalition. I recently began developing sport routes in Colorado under the guidance of my mentor Alan Prehmus and am currently participating in a routesetting apprenticeship with GP81 and The Try Hard Crew.

In 2020, I developed Black Girls Boulder, a climbing club designed to introduce more Black women/Non-binary folks to rock climbing and to provide physical and emotional support for beginner and competitive climbers through education, advocacy and mentorship.

Q & A

blue underline
  1. Who is your mentor?: Marina Inoue
  2. How did you get involved with your respective sport? : I didn’t truly get involved with climbing until I attended the Color the Crag climbing festival in 2018.
  3. Who were your influences early in life? : I didn’t have any climbing influences when I was younger since I discovered climbing as an adult. My mom influenced me to be fearless and be myself.
  4. What draws you to the outdoors?: I’ve been drawn to the outdoors my entire life. I was always climbing things and preferred to be outside while my friends were playing video games. It’s the quiet of the outdoors that keeps me coming back. And when I’m climbing, it’s the only time I can truly shut my brain off.
  5. What’s your dream trip or expedition?: My dream trip is to go climbing in Africa, Kenya to be exact. I’ve been trying to go for years, before I even found climbing. If it’s possible, this might be the year it actually happens.
  6. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: The perfect climbing partner can make you laugh so hard, you start crying and their idea of a rest is a quick dance session.
  7. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship program to others?: I want to make sure other Black women learn how to navigate being an athlete without feeling exploited. I want to make sure other women can feel confident in their passion and goals to grow as a climber.
