Biography

blue underline

Hello there! I’m Yasmine, an Iranian-American skier/climber, designer, and outdoor educator based in Seattle, WA with my partner and our fluffy four legged son, Milou. In my day job I focus on accessibility assisting in the equitable access of digital technologies for disabled communities. Though skiing was too costly to be a frequent endeavor for my family growing up, I would look for any excuse to catch a ride and slide down whatever slopes would have me. I finally moved out west in 2019 to be closer to the mountains - It was in the PNW where I discovered backcountry skiing, got my AIARE 1&2, and became a ski instructor. I was privileged to learn many of these new skills amongst other women & poc, unlocking this entire community of people I never had access to growing up. I dedicate most of my time outside to access and education - access to those who have traditionally been excluded from these spaces, and education that allows them to keep showing up. I’m so honored to have the opportunity to work with SCARPA to progress my own skills so I can continue to give back to these communities.

Q & A

  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport?: I learned to ski through an after school program in elementary school! They would shuttle us on a bus to a small local ski area Nashoba Valley and help subsidize our gear and tickets. I owe so much to that little program.
  2. Who were your influences early in life?: Aside from my parents, most of my family was abroad (first-gen life), so I’d refer to our family friends, many of whom were my dad’s high school classmates from Iran, as my uncles and aunts! My dad passed when I was in high school, and they collectively worked so hard to make sure my sister and I would never miss a beat. I owe so much to them all - it truly takes a village.
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: I ski to feel small, in the best possible way. Our world can be so chaotic and loud - but mountains help me re-shift & re-frame. They are humbling, and being able to navigate them with skis has taught me more patience, grit, and perspective than anything else I’ve ever done.
  4. What’s your dream trip or expedition?: My dream expedition would be to head back to Iran on a multi-day backcountry ski expedition in the Central Alborz mountains. My family grew up around those mountains and I’ve been visiting them since I was a kid.I would give anything to explore that terrain on skis one day.
  5. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: Communication, perspective, patience, and no summit fever 😊
  6. How are you going to pass on what you learn in the mentorship program to others?: My reason for doing this mentorship program is to pass the knowledge to others! Progressing my own skills in the backcountry will allow me to safely mentor others in those spaces.
