They fall apart! And good luck getting them repaired!

My daughter, now 16 has had these boots for 3 years. As they are for winter only, they have very little use. So far, the zipper for the right boot has completely broken and the plastic heel cups have warn through the boot liners into her ankles. This renders them completely useless. She sent a request to Scarpa to have them repaired and here's the response:

    Shelby,

Thanks for reaching out about your Phantom Techs.

Unfortunately, they're a bit outside of manufacturer warranty coverage, so we're going to refer you to this list of our authorized service partners that may be able to assist you with this repair.

How is a 16 year old supposed to pay for a new $900 pair of climbing boots? Did I mention that she placed 2nd in the world at the youth UIAA world comp? Maybe time to transition to sportiva boots. They seem to last a LOT longer.

    Light, warm, and comfortable

I love these boots. They are warm enough that I can wear them in temps down to single digits before adding toe warmers or heated socks. They are so light, that I have started wearing them instead of my fruitboots for all of my mixed climbing except for on overhanging dry tool routes. I really like the lace system with the toggle at my ankle because it is so much easier to tighten my boots just before a lead. These boots are supportive, but still comfortable to wear on long approaches.

Nothing else climbs as well or fits as well!

Best boot I've had for ice and mixed climbing here in Alaska. Dexterity is excellent. Warm enough for Mooses Tooth even though everyone else was in double boots. We have long approaches here and they have held up very well after a lot of milage while guiding and climbing. The fit is perfect, please don't make any major changes!

one boot to rule them all

This boot expanded what was possible for me to do while learning to put up first ascents in the Himalaya. Without a doubt it climbs ice and mixed remarkably well. What I didn't expect was how well it does on rock and technical approaches. Establishing new alpine rock routes at 4500m in the Kullu Valley, I would climb rock pitches in these boots both with and without crampons (depending on conditions). They jam and edge surprisingly well, and weigh almost nothing for when the sun comes out and I switched into rock shoes for the harder pitches. I love how light and durable they are, without sacrificing performance. I've walked straight through many a stream with these on approach and they just don't get wet... Call me old-fashioned, but I also really appreciate the lack of the boa closure, and freedom to adjust the fit according to the venue that the lace system permits.

    Warmer, more comfortable

This is the fourth generation of these boots I've climbed in, and they are the best. A little roomier in the toes so you get better circulation, feel a little warmer, they climb ice and mountain terrain well, just love 'em! I'm in these boots at least 50 days a winter. Below about -15C I wear heated socks as my feet are pretty cold sensitive after decades of doing cold things, but most people probably won't need that. Do loosen them off at belays when it's cold, they fit your feet really well and will compromise circulation if left tight (not a complaint--a good fit is the basis for not having heel lift and precision with your feet, just loosen them off if you crank them down).

At some point I'd like to see a BOA closure system on these, but there are pros and cons to that for sure!
