Best Backcountry Ski Boots

Here are the best back country ski boots made by Scarpa for 2024:
Category: All-Around

1. Maestrale RS

Weight per pair: 1470g; 3lb. 3.8oz (per boot)

Flex: 125

Forward Lean: 16º +/- 2º

Last: 100 mm

Cost: $949.00 USD

This is without a doubt my favorite all-day touring boot. As expected, it crushes the uphill without limiting you to “dad turns” on the downhill. The Maestrale RS and its sister- the Gea RS, improve on an already impressive balance and show why it one of the world’s best-selling AT ski boots.

With a redesigned last of 102mm, the widest part of the shell is now located further back near the “sixth toe” providing more comfort in a critical area. So long to the days of not having a Scarpa foot. Combining that critical update with the progressive 125 flex allows the boot to be driven hard on almost any ski. Whether you’re looking at a boot for a hut trip or a springtime couloir mission the Maestrale RS provides top tier quality.
Category: Hybrid

2. 4-QUATTRO PRO

Binding System: Alpine Grip Walk + AT + TLT

Weight per pair: 1555g; 3lb 6.08oz (per boot)

Flex: 130+

Forward Lean: 19°+/- 2°/-4°

Last: 100 mm

Cost: $949.00 USD

If you’re looking for a boot that can move seamlessly between hut trips and steeps at your local resort, look no further. The 4-Quattro Pro is the lightest weight, most powerful boot in its class and is truly a go anywhere, do anything boot designed for hard charging both on and off piste. While this boot is new for the season, it is built off the layout from its award-winning siblings the 4-Quattro XT and 4-Quattro SL.

There are a few updates that really set this Pro version apart. The new Secure Speed Lock4 provides extra piece of mind and security when charging down a couloir, all while still providing 60° range of motion for long days on the skin track. Add in a new Pebax® Rnew® reinforced cuff that produces faster energy transmission from skier to ski and you can see Scarpa’s commitment to getting the small details right.
Category: Telemark

3. TX PRO

Binding System: NTN, Telemark Tech

Weight per pair: 1454g; 3lb 6.5oz (per boot)

ROM: 62°

Forward Lean: 14°+/- 2°

Last: 102mm

Cost: $849.00 USD

The moment so many of you have been waiting for is finally here! After years of research, testing and listening to the telemark community, SCARPA is proud to introduce the most innovative, lightest-weight, and efficient telemark boot ever created.

Come updates you’ll notice right away are the shifts to a lighter weight and increased range of motion in walk mode. These upgrades make walking uphill a significantly more enjoyable experience and enhance your backcountry experience without sacrificing torsional rigidity on days when you stay inbounds.

Have you ever wanted to be a product tester?! Well, they want to hear from you. Scarpa’s motto for the launch of the new boot is “We Care You Tele” and each pair of TX Pro comes with a QR that will take purchasers to a survey site, allowing for the unique ability to give feedback on the new updates and what you want to see in the future.

Tips for Backcountry Skiing

  • Plan your Trip. Moving away from the resort and into the backcountry means navigating unmitigated and dangerous zones. Know the areas you want to ride and know what your group’s risk tolerance is when planning any trip into the back country. Make sure to inform someone of your planned route and estimated return time, especially if you’re heading into more remote areas. On top of that, consider taking an avalanche course offered by a local guide service!
  • Gear. Beacon, shovel, probe. Before you look at what boots you want for the backcountry make sure you’re familiar with these three items. It them can be the difference between success and failure for you and your partners.
