So far it seems like a great shoe

I have only owned these shoes for a short period of time, so I can't make any comments on durability or how they perform for scrambling. I was looking for an approach shoe that would fit my wide feet and based on other comments I saw on the internet these shoes seemed like my only option. While the Mescalito doesn't come in wide sizes I've found that the toe box has adequate room and I can wear these all day without any issues. I normally wear a EE or EEE or the widest shoe I can find. The fit in the toe box looks like it will be close to perfect as with the laces snugged up I can probably climb lower 5th class without a problem, but still hike in with the laces loosened up. My feet are kind of cursed as I have wide feet and skinny heels and while the toe box seems to work out well the heel cup in these shoes is wide for my heels and I get a lot of movement, but I have ways to deal with that. The cushion is adequate (my feet generally live in Hoka's) and its probably the right balance of having enough cushion so you can put miles in with the shoe, but not too much that it would impact being able to climb/scramble in the shoe. Overall, I'mm just happy to be able to find an approach shoe that comes close to fitting feet. I would buy again.

    Great shoe.

I wear approach shoes a lot, and love these. Comfortable, I've climbed and guided a lot in them, good rubber, wear well. After a ton of abuse one of the rands delaminated slightly, just put some Goo in there and no issues until the soles were done. Worth a little extra effort for the planet! And they dry fast too, which is nice when you get soaked in a sudden storm or misjudge that creek hop a tad and get a foot wet.

    Great approach shoe

I have had several pairs of these now and love them. They are great to walk in but also climb really well. I live in the Front Range of Colorado and these are my "go to" shoes for hiking to climbs and scrambling in the flatirons. They are a great option for multipitch climbs that involve walk offs for the weight and versatility.

The leather version is a great shoe

This is not a review of the Planet, but of the leather mescalito. I assume they are the same but leather molds to one's feet better. I am writing here because the leather version is not longer offered on the website. I am troubled by that because I really like the leather version. Fit is the most important issue and for me this is perfect. It has lower volume but a modestly wider toebox than the typical approach shoe. I have had several La Sportiva and Scarpa approach shoes, specifically Cirque Pro, Boulder X, TX4 and Zen. Cirque Pro was awesome but was discontinued ages ago. Boulder X is typically slightly narrow, but otherwise a great supportive highly functional shoe. TX4 is wider except in the heel, where it is too narrow. Also not very supportive. The Zen always gave me corns on my little toe, but great supportive shoe otherwise. All performed well on rock. Boulder and Zen are by far the best on the trail while still maintaining good rock performance. The leather mescalito is the most comfortable and seems to perform well on rock. It is not quite as supportive on the trail as the Zen, but is still better than most. Hope Scarpa USA brings it back!

    Best approach shoe I've found.

This shoe fit like a glove out of the box. Picked it up a couple months ago and have hiked in Alaska, the Rockies and Italian Alps. Fine on paved surfaces. Comfortable on rocks, gravel, scree and dirt. Tough and sheds burrs and thorns with ease. The sizes tend to run small, so add a half size to what you usually wear.
